There is no common diet for everyone who needs to develop an individualized diet when they have diabetes. Therefore, a proper diet should be used in accordance with each person’s medical condition, treatment goals, desired outcomes, preferences and eating habits.
To achieve the above objectives in eating and drinking, patients need to follow the following principles:
Should eat moderately, be on time, not to be hungry, not to be too full otherwise it will be difficult to control your blood sugar.
Meals should be divided (at least 4 meals), Do not skip your meal at night, you should eat must at night to avoid hypoglycemia.
Do not change the eating time too quickly or volumes of the meals. Should not be too abstinent but full range of nutrients and supplements are needed like: protein, fat, sugar powder, vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Each type of food contains a number of different nutrients and there is no one that contains all the nutrients needed for human body. Therefore, it is necessary to combine a variety of foods together.
Meals need to have the following 4 food groups:
Group of cereals, sweet potatoes and powdered sugar (glucose): This group provides 60 to 70% of energy needs for human body. Grocery cereals are containing with high GI and low GI. High GI will be a great food to your mouth but trust me it will cause more issues. So, avoid high GI and eat low GI cereals. I will suggest to choose cereals wisely. Eat just enough rice, sticky rice or brown rice according to the energy needs of the body. Limit potatoes, vermicelli, bread, powdered sugar, pastries because it is easy to increase blood sugar. Do not directly use foods with a rapidly absorbing sugar content.
Milk, meat, fish, eggs, dried beans and their products: provides 15-20% of energy needed to human body. This group provides protein, phosphorus, iron and vitamins. In case of overweight, obesity you need to choose lean meat, not fat meat. Chicken skin should be removed before you prepare to cook for your diet. Try to eat plant proteins too much.
Oil, fat, Oil seeds: Provides 20-30% of energy needed for human body, it helps to provide fat (lipid), gives high energy, increases absorption of oil soluble vitamins. People with diabetes should increase the intake of vegetable oil (soybean oil, sesame, olive oil) because these oils contains many unsaturated fatty acids needed for the body. Limit the use of fat, butter and canned foods.
Group of vegetables and fruits: Provides fiber, vitamins, amino acids and minerals. Patient needs to eat vegetables, ripe fruits, should eat a lot of vegetables salad.
In addition to the usual daily vegetables and fruits (spinach, vegetables, zucchini, etc.), bitter melon, spirulina are also frequently used by diabetics patients.
In addition to a reasonable daily diet, patients need to pay attention to follow all the rules, use the medicine as prescribed by your doctor or need to add herbal products to help stabilize and control blood sugar, It is also important to reduce the dangerous complications of diabetes.
