Medicare offers two main plans: Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). Some people also buy additional coverage such as Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) or a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan also known as Medigap.
Original Medicare (Part A and B) covers hospital stays in full for 60 days, and has affordable copays for any additional days. Medicare insurance covers 80 percent of outpatient medical costs. The choice of doctors, hospitals, and other providers that accept Medicare, is available to beneficiaries.
Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) are private insurance plans offered by private companies that are contracted with Medicare. These plans offer additional coverage, on top of Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. This extra coverage may include vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs. All Medicare Advantage Plans also cover emergency or urgent care.
Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), Special Needs Plans (SNP), HMO Point Of Service (HMOPOS), and Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA). Medicare Advantage Plans are available to those enrolled in Original Medicare, with the exception of people suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), with some exceptions.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plans subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. Most Medicare Advantage Plans cover prescription drugs, but if they don’t, a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan is available. Enrolling in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan will result in disenrollment from the Medicare Advantage Plan and a return to Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement Plans are private insurance plans that cover some health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t provide for, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Those enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, cannot use Medicare Supplement Insurance to pay for plan costs.
